Benefits of E-Learning

E-learning is quickly becoming the preferred method of education.  In the past, there have been numerous schools who offer the opportunity to pursue higher education entirely online. The success of this has been unsurmountable, especially as more students must work in order to pay for their education or to afford living expenses.  As school security becomes more of a concern, many parents are opting to enroll their young children in online schools.  With the economy tightening the wallets of families, it has become a lot more economical to have children learn from home.

Yet, the main reason that e-learning has become so popular is mostly to do with the increasingly available technology.  Since tuition rates are on the rise, colleges are looking for ways to cut expenses for both themselves and their students.  As tablets and e-readers continue to dominate the market, higher education institutions are starting to look for ways to incorporate these tools into their e-learning programs.   E-readers and tablets allow students to view reading materials on their electronic device which greatly reduces the costs that students need to spend on reading materials and the amount that schools need to spend on any printed materials that they provide. Additionally, these electronics further increase the ease of e-learning by truly allowing individuals to learn anywhere.  If a student’s work schedule prevents them from being home sitting in front of the computer, they can now log into class on their work breaks or during their downtime with their portable e-reader or tablet.  In fact many higher education institutions as well as K-12 schools are now including tablets as part of the required materials when students enroll in courses.  Teachers are being trained on how to use these devices so that they too can begin interacting with students electronically.

One of the biggest advantages of the rise of e-learning is that it forces both students and teachers alike to use and become familiar with new technology and software.  Although millions of people use computers every day, there are a good number of individuals who still do not know how to properly use them or the programs contained on them.  E-learning often requires that students take courses on software, such as Microsoft Office, and become intimately acquainted with using them beyond their basic functions.  Likewise, older teachers often stay away from any new form of technology simply because of their inexperience with it.  However, as schools begin to utilize more and more electronic devices and online programs, they are now providing their staff with training so that they can more effectively communicate with students and simplify the education process.

E-learning also provides higher education institutions with the opportunity to better prepare their students for the workplace.  Since business expenses continue to increase, companies are looking for ways to create more efficient processes and eliminate the need for an excessive amount of staff to perform basic job functions.  By forcing students to regularly use the computer and gain knowledge of how to operate in a paperless environment, schools are allowing students to understand how to work smarter and not harder. E-learning gives students the chance to eliminate the need for unnecessary legwork and that is often the type of mentality that employers are looking for when they hire new workers these days.

Higher education is only possible for many individuals thanks to the increased offering of e-learning.  When the global economy went south, many middle aged people and parents returned to school to either obtain a degree or to switch their career.  For people who have families to support or children to tend to, going to a traditional college campus for classes is not an option.  Instead, these individuals are able to obtain their degrees online and do all of their work from the convenience of their home or anywhere that they have an internet connection.  Usually, a lot of people have found that e-learning does not take away from the personal attention that you may receive in a traditional classroom setting. In fact, many teachers are actually able to give more focused attention to their online students.  With the availability of things like instant messaging, email, and even video chats, teachers are can communicate with their students any time throughout the day.  Things like smartphones and tablets allow teachers to be able to check in with their students regularly and to keep a close eye on the progress they make.

There may still be many of skeptics when it comes to e-learning, but there is no doubting that it is the way of the future.  As schools continue to offer more online options to their students, e-learning is rapidly reshaping the education arena.
